Analysis Dont Marry Career Women free essay sample

And if they do have kids, they are more likely to be unhappy about it. A recent study in Social Forces, a research journal, found that womeneven those with a feminist outlookare happier when their husband is the primary breadwinner. Not happy conclusions, especially given that many men, particularly successful men, are attracted to women with similar goals and aspirations. And why not? After all, your typical career girl is well educated, ambitious, informed and engaged. All seemingly good things, right? Sure †¦ at least until you get married. Then, to put it bluntly, the more successful she is, the more likely she is to grow dissatisfied with you. Sound familiar? Many factors contribute to a stable marriage, including the marital status of your spouses parents (folks with divorced parents are significantly more likely to get divorced themselves), age at first marriage, race, religious beliefs and socio-economic status. And, of course, many working women are indeed happily and fruitfully marriedits just that they are less likely to be so than nonworking women. And that, statistically speaking, is the rub. To be clear, were not talking about a high school dropout minding a cash register. For our purposes, a career girl has a university-level (or higher) education, works more than 35 hours a week outside the home and makes more than $30,000 a year. If a host of studies are to be believed, marrying these women is asking for trouble. If they quit their jobs and stay home with the kids, they will be unhappy (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2003). They will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Social Forces, 2006). You will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2001). You will be more likely to fall ill (American Journal of Sociology). Even your house will be dirtier (Institute for Social Research). Why? Well, despite the fact that the link between work, women and divorce rates is complex and controversial, much of the reasoning is based on a lot of economic theory and a bit of common sense. In classic economics, a marriage is, at least in part, an exercise in labor specialization. Traditionally, men have tended to do market or paid work outside the home, and women have tended to do nonmarket or household work, including raising children. All of the work must get done by somebody, and this pairing, regardless of who is in the home and who is outside the home, accomplishes that goal. Nobel laureate Gary S. Becker argued that when the labor specialization in a marriage decreasesif, for example, both spouses have careersthe overall value of the marriage is lower for both partners because less of the total needed work is getting done, making life harder for 2 oth partners and divorce more likely. And, indeed, empirical studies have concluded just that. In 2004, John H. Johnson examined data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation and concluded that gender has a significant influence on the relationship between work hours and increases in the probability of divorce. Womens work hours consistently increase divorce, whereas increases in mens work hours oft en have no statistical effect. I also find that the incidence in divorce is far higher in couples where both spouses are working than in couples where only one spouse is employed, Johnson says. A few other studies, which have focused on employment (as opposed to working hours), have concluded that working outside the home actually increases marital stability, at least when the marriage is a happy one. But even in these studies, wives employment does correlate positively to divorce rates, when the marriage is of low marital quality. The other reason a career can hurt a marriage will be obvious to anyone who has seen his or her mate run off with a co-worker: When your spouse works outside the home, chances increase that he or she will meet someone more likable than you. The work environment provides a host of potential partners, researcher Adrian J. Blow reported in The Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, and individuals frequently find themselves spending a great deal of time with these individuals. Theres more: According to a wide-ranging review of the published literature, highly educated people are more likely to have had extramarital sex (those with graduate degrees are 1. 75 times more likely to have cheated than those with high school diplomas). Additionally, individuals who earn more than $30,000 a year are more likely to cheat. And if the cheating leads to divorce, youre really in trouble. Divorce has been positively correlated with higher rates of alcoholism, clinical depression and suicide. Other studies have associated divorce with increased rates of cancer, stroke, and sexually transmitted disease. Plus, divorce is financially devastating. According to one recent study on Marriage and Divorces Impact on Wealth, published in The Journal of Sociology, divorced people see their overall net worth drop an average of 77%. So why not just stay single? Because, academically speaking, a solid marriage has a host of benefits beyond just individual happiness. There are broader social and health implications as well. According to a 2004 paper titled What Do Social Scientists Know About the Benefits of Marriage? , marriage is positively associated with better outcomes for children under most circumstances and higher earnings for adult men, and being married and being in a satisfying marriage are positively associated with health and negatively associated with mortality. In other words, a good marriage is associated with a higher income, a longer, healthier life and better-adjusted kids. A word of caution, though: As with any social scientific study, its important not to confuse correlation with causation. In other words, just because married folks are healthier than single people, it doesnt mean that marriage is causing the health gains. It could just be that healthier people are more likely to be married. †1 1 http://www. forbes . com/2006/08/23/Marriage-Careers-Divorce_cx_mn_land. html, 15. 10. 11 3 Introduction Comparison between man and woman has always been a big topic in human history. Mostly, the importance of a woman was not as high as a man’s. Fortunately, this idea has changed a lot until today. Women have received more rights and they are now almost everywhere, where a man could be. This does not mean that the fight has ended though. This subject is still very popular and we will go on discussing the roles of men and women in society until the end of time. Michael Noer, the executive news editor of the Forbes magazine, published an editorial in August 2006, which caused huge anger and many discussions. This editorial is titled Don’t Marry Career Women and it has been removed just after a few hours because a lot of people, particularly women, considered it to be quite sexist and felt offended. The Forbes magazine decided to republish the article with an opposite text called Don’t Marry a Lazy Man and also created a forum for the readers to discuss this subject. 2 Based on different statistics, Michael Noer tries to prove that for an eternal marriage you can marry any kind of woman but a career woman. The point he wants to make is that the women with a career are already overwhelmed with their stressful job, so that they cannot cope with the stress of household and children at home. He mentions many other points in order to warn men from an unhealthy marriage with a successful career woman. The approach: purely analytical or more instinctive? In his text, Michael Noer alludes to a lot of different studies which show that career women have many difficulties in their marriages. Since his arguments always refer to these statistics, the text is quite analytical in general. However, there is no detailed information about these studies mentioned in the text. We do not know how many people were asked, how long the studies took, etcetera. Furthermore, if Michael Noer did not share the same idea, he would not have written about it. That is why it is very likely that the instinctive approach was also rather present. Examples of different kinds of reasoning 1) Deductive reasoning: P1: Successful men are attracted to women with similar goals and aspirations. P2: Career women are well educated, ambitious and informed. Conclusion: Successful men are naturally attracted to career women. This argument is a categorical syllogism and its structure is correct, which means that it is valid. Nevertheless, we do not know if every single successful man is attracted to an educated woman. This 2 http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Michael_Noer, 17. 10. 11 4 depends a lot on the different kind of personal preference. It is also not certain that all career women are well educated. There are other ways to be successful, too. In conclusion, although the structure of the argument is correct, the premises can be challenged. That is why the argument is uncogent and not sound in every situation. ) Causal reasoning(inductive): P1: In classic economics, a marriage is an exercise in labor specialization. P2: When both spouses have career, the labor specialization in the marriage decreases and the less of the needed work is getting done. Conclusion: When both spouses have career, the marriage will not work and they will get divorced. The first premise is strong, because it is a known theory i n classic economics. The second premise is based on general experience, but there could be couples who work and do their work at home at the same time without problem. Thus, P2 is quite weak and that leads to an uncogent argument. Example of an assumption present in the text P1: The aim of a marriage is to have an everlasting relationship, to be faithful und to have children. P2: Career women are more likely to get divorced, more likely to cheat and less likely to have children. Conclusion: If you want a stable marriage, do not marry a career woman. The first premise of this argument is a value assumption which is present in a lot of arguments of the whole text. It is true that the traditional meaning of marriage is a promise for an eternal love and creation of a family with children.

Niels Bohr Essays (183 words) - Atomic Physics, Chemical Properties

Niels Bohr October 21, 1998 Niels Bohr Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen, he is the son of a physiology professor, and went to school at the University of Copenhagen, this is where he got his doctorate in 1911. Bohr won the Nobel piece prize for his theory of atomic structures. According to Microsoft Encarta His work drew on Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, in which the atom is seen as a compact nucleus surrounded by a swarm of much lighter electrons. He thought that electrons are arranged in definite shells, or quantum levels, at a big distance from the nucleus. The arrangement of these electrons is called the electron configuration. The number of these electrons equals the atomic number if the atom; hydrogen has a single electron, helium has 2, and uranium has 92. The electron shells are built from a first shell to a total of seven shells. The first shell is complete with two electrons, the second can hold up to eight electrons, and the following shells hold larger numbers. The last electrons determine the chemical behavior of the atom. Science Essays

Essay on Jeff Bezos and Amazon Ceo

Essay on Jeff Bezos and Amazon Ceo Essay on Jeff Bezos and Amazon Ceo Amazon.com is the leading online book retailer. The company also has an array of products and services available to its customer. So why did Amazon venture into the E- Grocery Market? This paper will address this question, using a peer reviewed article named, â€Å"Amazon’s Foray into the E-Grocery Market,† and the strategic concepts discussed in the assigned weekly reading. According to Devi, six months after opening in July 1995, Amazon.Com offered one-million book titles through its website and posted net sales of $511,000. But, after accounting for operating expenses, it incurred a net loss of $303,000. (Devi, 2008) This loss did not deter Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, who believed that his fledgling business would succeed. Mr. Bezos continue to work diligently to make Amazon better. By 1996 he had hired about 151 employees and had 2.5 million titles online. Although the business had grown, Amazon.com still suffered a net loss of $5.7 million because the company spent more on shipping the books to the customers. (Devi, 2008) Amazon also faced fierce online competition rivalries during the same year. According to Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson, competition rivalry, is an ongoing set of competitive action and responses that occurs among firms as they maneuver toward an advantageous market position†( Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson, 2011, p.130). Company li ke BookStacks, BookZone, and Internet Bookshop, were a few of the competitors that made it hard for Amazon.com to gain a competitive advantage. In order to gain a competitive advantage, Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos knew he had to adjust his company operational strategies. According to Devi, Amazon had three operational strategies; cost-leadership, customer differentiation and focus strategy. Cost-leadership; this strategy was employed by Amazon to differentiate itself primarily on the basis of price. The strategy made sure that Amazon offers the same quality products as other companies for a considerably less price. (Devi, 2008) Amazon second strategy was customer differentiation. â€Å"This strategy ensured that Amazon provides current and potential customers, differentiation through design, quality or convenience and Amazon.com always selects a differentiator that is different from other competitors, so that its consumers can recognize and differentiate its product from competitors†(Devi, 2008, p. 64). The last strategy Amazon used was focus strategy. This strategy takes one of the two earlier strategies and applies it t o a niche within the market (Saunders, 2001; pp.122-123). â€Å"Amazon.com focuses on outstanding customer service as a niche but not the whole market because each niche has its own demand and requirement† (Devi, 2008, p. 64). Jeff Bezos knew that he needed to grow his company; therefore, he took advantage of every opportunity to do just that. He teamed his company with Target Corporation, Circuit City, Borders, Walden, Waterstones and CDNOW to sell its books and other products on its behalf online. He also partnered with Toys R Us, expanded its choice of merchandise well beyond its core line of books, music, and videos, and added new technology to improve customer relations. (Devi, 2008) Mr. Bezos wanted Amazon.com to offer customers everything they could dream of online. Although, Amazon offered a variety of merchandise and services, online groceries was something it did not. Amazon CEO saw this as another opportunity for his company to grow by using it to provide something to the customers that the competition could not. This action is also known as Competitive Behavior, â€Å"which is the set of competitive actions and responses the firms takes to build or defend it competitive advantages and improve it marketing position† (Hitt, et al., 2011, p.130). So in 2006, Amazon

Education In Canada New Opportunities For Students

Education In Canada New Opportunities For Students Education opportunities in Canada Not every country can be proud of its education system. Obviously, there are countries-leaders that can provide the excellent educational opportunities for students from around the world. Also, there are countries schooling system of which leaves much to be desired. Such countries as the United States of America, Great Britain, South Korea, Finland, Norway and Japan are in the top of the world’s educational systems ranking. However, there is one more country that can be definitely added to the list of the countries where you could go to in order to get a great education. It is Canada. Let’s have a look at what this country can offer in terms of education nowadays. Canadian education in PISA ranking In 1997 the Program for International Student Assessment was formed. Its abbreviation is PISA and it is a worldwide study aimed to compare education attainment around the world. The tests are held once in 3 years and are run by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). According to one of the recent international PISA tests and evaluations, Canada appeared in the top 10 in such subjects as mathematics, reading and science. Canada’s teenagers appeared to be among the best-educated students in the world, and, in particular, they ended up far ahead of their geographical neighbors (the USA) as well as some leading European countries. Also, according to the results of PISA tests, Canada has the world’s highest number of adults who work and who have a higher education (compared to other countries which took part in OECD testing). Equal rights policy Many students in Canada are originally born in families where both parents are from other countries. Nevertheless, due to the number of factors, children of newly-arrived families have no difficulty with integrating into the society. As a result, their academic achievements are impressive. Mainly, this happens because equity is what Canadians make an emphasis on. There is a strong dedication to fairness and equal treatment of any student, regardless of the child’s capabilities, color of skin or origin. In addition to this, one of the key factors is that teachers are well paid (as per international standards) and to become a teacher one needs to be a great professional. High academic performance of students is a natural result of this. Canada is welcoming international students The Canadian education policy was always aimed at providing equal chances to everyone. A great effort to offer a quality education by a well-trained staff was always a priority. Compared to many other countries, Canada was always very welcoming towards international students. Now, due to the recent events in the United States (policy of President Trump caused a decrease in the number of international students), the number of applications from overseas students reached record levels and, more than ever, Canada becomes a popular choice as a place to study. Canada has been always famous for its good quality of living and comparatively affordable education fees, so if you consider studying abroad, such country as Canada becomes a really viable choice.

A story Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

A story - Essay Example They always treat me in a way, as if I still belong to the diaper class. After all that, some answers began screwing up, I heard a tone at the back of my ears, â€Å"come on honey, relax, everything will be okay, I believe it will not end up in a fight but this time, your mother especially, will be the first to understand that you are now big enough to be made for choices and followed around so that no mistakes are made. Take it easy because such days are over, do you not just get it? You are an adult by this time in twenty.† Supper was approaching, and the words gave me more than enough strength. This is all what I needed. â€Å"Honey, honey,† all this time was in my room pretending to do some homework when I heard my nanny voice calling, â€Å"it is supper time, food is ready and we all waiting for you in the dining, come over men.† I stayed up and grabbed a chair, after some minutes of prayer, some force came in me, and â€Å"this is probably the perfect chance to begin your conviction, because everyone will be spending some precious time with their food.† â€Å"Okay, mum, da†¦dad,† I then went mute. â€Å"Yes, they were ready to hear from me. Business Globalisation in Central and Eastern Europe Assignment

Business Globalisation in Central and Eastern Europe - Assignment Example These changes have occurred in different stages and businesses have undergone various transformations in order to remain relevant in the market. This paper explores different stages of globalization with a special focus on how Coca-Cola Company has responded to every phase of liberalization. Pearce (2006: 28) argues that every institution and business must commit to enhancing its global competitiveness as a crucial strategic goal. In the current business environment characterized by intense competition, no business organization can succeed if it fails to match with the high standards set by its competitors in the particular market niche. There are two phases of globalization recorded in the history of international trade namely old and new globalization (Manea and Robert, 2004: 203). International trade undertaken from 1893 to 1913 is classified in the old phase while the new phase entails trade from 1915 to the present. Although these phases are defined by an increasing gross domest ic product ratio and growing international investments, there are distinct differences. In the old phrase, there were high barriers to trade caused by high tariffs. However, the new phase has witnessed a drastic reduction of tariff barriers, resulting in the opening international borders to a high volume of trade (Manea and Robert, 2004: 215). The new globalization has witnessed the expansion of new markets, services and the emergence of global brands. Many countries are members of international trading organizations formed to set the norms and standards of trade. In addition, emerging issues such as democracy, human rights, and market economy are increasingly defining the norms and rules of new globalization. At a business level, the new globalization creates the necessity of expanding from local to regional levels. This implies that businesses should no longer distinguish between foreign and domestic market, but concentrate on enhancing the quality of their products, because of in tense competition at both levels (Anderson, 2000: 62). Businesses undergo five stages before becoming global firms. Generally, exporting goods or services is the initial stage of engaging in international business by local firms. In later stages, most businesses establish ventures in foreign countries (Anderson, 2000: 86). Narula (2003: 35) identified five stages that businesses undergo before developing into a global corporation. The first stage entails exporting using overseas dealers and distributors. In this stage, the business is predominantly domestic and it engages the services of foreign dealers as it expands into new overseas markets. In the second stage, the company has already established a foothold in foreign markets and therefore exporting its products using its own distributors and dealers (Narula (2003:43). During the third stage, the company is more established in the foreign markets. The firm begins undertaking to manufacture its products, sales, marketing, and othe r activities on its own (Pearce, 2006: 57).Â
